Senate Bill 247, the “Stop the Darfur Genocide Act”, passed the Texas House of Representatives unanimously today. The bill has already cleared the Texas Senate and is now on its way to the Governor’s desk, pending a procedural vote tomorrow. Governor Perry endorsed the targeted divestment legislation in his inaugural address and State of the State speech.

The bipartisan legislation, led by Rep. Corbin Van Arsdale (R - Tomball) and Senator Rodney Ellis (D - Houston), has over 85 co-authors and enjoys tremendous support from both ends of the political spectrum. Religious conservatives and liberal activists found common ground and formed an alliance to pass the legislation in Texas. The bill is similar to legislation that has already passed in 12 states and is currently pending in 15 others.

SB 247 would require the Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS) and the Employee Retirement System of Texas (ERS) to engage and possibly divest from certain companies doing business in Sudan who substantially benefit the central government, provide little benefit to Sudan’s citizens, and who have failed to address their role in indirectly facilitating Sudan’s genocide.

With an approximate value of $426 million in targeted fund holdings, the financial impact of the divestment effort on the Sudanese government is substantial. The amount represents about 0.59% of the assets under management by ERS & TRS.

Mark Hanis, Executive Director of the Genocide Intervention Network, said, “Today’s actions by the Texas House of Representatives, combined with overwhelming bi-partisan support for Senate Bill 247, establish the state of Texas as a leader in the fight against the first genocide of the 21st Century. Texans should be proud to help lead the world in making ‘Never Again’ a reality.”

The Law Offices of Frank L. Branson has announced a $20.8 million jury verdict handed down today on behalf of the wife and estate of a man who died from injuries he suffered when his vehicle was struck by an 18-wheeler.

Firm founder Frank L. Branson represented Kathleen Bohne in the wrongful death lawsuit over the August 12, 2004 truck wreck that claimed the life of her husband Robert E. Bohne.

Jurors in Judge Mark Greenberg’s Dallas County Court No. 5 heard evidence that truck driver Turner Bruce Yarbrough caused the multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 635 in Dallas. Mr. Yarbrough was driving a tractor-trailer carrying hazardous waste for Dallas-based Enviroclean Management Services Inc.

He collided with a car driven by Mr. Bohne, causing the car to flip over.

Mr. Bohne suffered serious injuries in the crash. He never left the hospital and died from complications caused by his injuries 162 days later. (more…)

Dallas is hot … and not just in August. Joining New York, LA, Houston and Miami, the Dallas area leads the nation in elective cosmetic procedures. The producers of HotdocsTV have chosen the Metroplex to anchor its new 13- week series on elective procedures, plastic surgery and beauty information.

The show features many leading area doctors, including Drs. Andy Chang, John Tebbetts, Lori Stetler, and Jay Burns, and practices Kleiman-Evangelista Eye Center and Lap-Band Solutions.

HotdocsTV leaves the drama and storylines to Dr. 90210 and Nip/Tuck. The show sets out to educate its viewers, being decisively informative first … then entertaining. “So many people are interested in improving their appearance … in managing how they age … going beyond working out,” says Executive Producer Matt Williams of Hacienda Nocturna Productions. “We want these people - and, believe me, it’s not just women anymore - to have the information necessary to make smart decisions about having work done.”

Catch the trailer on YouTube, Google or hotdocstv.com. The series is next slated for production in Houston, followed by Los Angeles and Miami in 2008.

Premiering May 27th, HotdocsTV airs Sunday mornings on NBC/KXAS from 11:00 to 11:30 AM.
